A malfunction of the baggage sorting system in Ben-Gurion International Airport resulted in significant delays in departures on Sunday morning, 24 Sivan 5774. Many flights were delayed as a result. Airport officials announced the malfunction was a serious one, impacting its new baggage sorting system that began operating in March 2014.
Troubles for departing passengers began at 05:00 on Sunday morning. As a result the passenger check-in booths were not opened. The suitcases that were manually moved on carts did not arrive at the planes on time. This had a direct impact on 18 flights, causing a 90 minute delay on the average.
Statements were released to the media that the malfunction was corrected at about 11:00.
