Degel Hatorah Jerusalem Councilmen are stepping up their opposition to Mayor Nir Barkat due to increased chilul Shabbos in the capital. Degel Hatorah MKs Moshe Gafne, Uri Maklev, and Yaakov Asher convened on Thursday 14 Sivan with the party’s Jerusalem officials to discuss the matter. On the agenda is the worrisome change in City Hall policy, which permits an increase chilul Shabbos including the opening of businesses on Shabbos. The elected officials will also discuss what they perceive to be the discriminatory policies of the Jerusalem administration towards the city’s chareidi residents.
Degel officials have told the media they are taking their battle against Barkat’s policies to the next level as is evident in the Degel affiliated Yated Neeman edition Thursday, which includes an attack against the Jerusalem mayor. Barkat comes under attack in Yated for the spreading chilul Shabbos in the capital. Yated speaks of “record-breaking” anti-chareidi policies by the current administration including the cancelation of building tenders in chareidi neighborhoods.
According to Yated, Degel officials are meeting in urgent session to map out their strategy for the battle against City Hall.

Any credibility that the chareidi world may have had regarding chillul Shabbat was lost when they insisted on having their bonfires in Meron on Motzei Shabbat, in spite of the fact that they knew that hundreds of people would have to be mchallel Shabbat to prepare for them.
Given that the charedim basically mandated chilul Shabat to prepare for the bonfires on Lag B’Omer, refusing overtures by many Dati rabbis to postpone the bonfires to the next night similarly to the way that Yom HaZikaron and Yom HaAtzmaut get pushed off, there isn’t a lot of credibility here.
may i suggest that step #1 be achdus at the next election instead of each party looking out for their own best interest?
YATED paper is a match to inflaming machlokes.
