New Regulation for Candidates Taking Chief Rabbinate Exams

examThe chodesh Av exam scheduled for this coming summer will be taken by hundreds of candidates working to complete portions of exams given by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel to obtain Yoreh Yoreh as well as certification as a neighborhood rav, regional rav and city rav. The exams are scheduled from 22 to 25 Tammuz but called the “Av Exams”.

The Chief Rabbis have decided that beginning in 5775, the tests will be given twice annually; during the winter (end of Adar/beginning of Nissan) and the summer exam (Tammuz/Av). One of the eligibility requirements will be documenting at least 5 years limud in a yeshiva/kollel after the age of 18. To date one was not required to document limud in a yeshiva or kollel.

The test is usually given to hundreds of applicants in Binyanei Ha’uma, the Jerusalem Convention Center, with applicants arriving from areas throughout Israel. Applicants from distant cities like Eilat generally arrive a day early since applicants are instructed to appear at 09:00 and doors are closed at 10:00.

  1. There has been a requirement to document the years of Limud in a yeshiva o as long as I can remember. you also need Hamlatzas from Rabbonim saying that you learned the material you are being tested on.
