Yerushalayim: Bnei Yeshivos May Register for Marriage in a Yeshiva

chupThe head of the Jerusalem Religious Council Yehoshua Yishai has given the order to the marriage registration unit that talmidei yeshivos and students in universities in the capital will be able to register to get married in their schools.

The new marriage registration reform involves the council sending marriage registration officials to yeshivos and campuses once monthly to permit applicants to register without having to travel to the religious council office.

A letter was sent to roshei yeshiva informing them of the new service, which officials point out will avoid much bitul Torah. In institutions that require additional service the visits will be made once weekly if required instead of once monthly.

The chareidi yeshivos that received the letter advising them of the new service include Chevron, Porat Yosef, Ateret Yisrael, and Chazon Ovadia. The dati leumi yeshivot include Merkaz HaRav and Yeshivat HaKotel. The letter will be sent to Hebrew University in the coming days.

Yishai explains the religious council has come to the realization students and talmidim are very busy and this service will assist them significantly.

The new service signals the Jerusalem Religious Council has decided to become service oriented in an effort to have more people registering for marriage in Yerushalayim, a profitable venture as is evident by the list of charges on the website. It may be the result of the new national marriage registration that permits one to register to get married anywhere, and not just in one’s city of residence as was the case prior to the reform.

  1. However if the new policy is to punish the wife and children of those who refuse to serve in the army, why would anyone want the government to know they were married. By halacha there is no requirement to register with the government (other than dina malchusa dina which doesn’t apply to a regime engaged in war on Torah, especially in Eretz Yisrael)..
