MK (Kadima) Shaul Mofaz believes the people should determine who serve as president and not just the MKs in Knesset.
Mofaz told Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) on Sunday, 25 Iyar that he did not sign to permit any of the candidate in the presidential race to run and he would not reveal who he plans to support in the election. Mofaz added that he does not agree with the current system by which the 120 members of Knesset determine who serve as president for a seven year term. He feels the people should have the vote and not just MKs.
At present, six candidates have received the required ten MK signatures to permit running in the race. This includes Reuven Rivlin, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, Meir Sheetrit, Prof. Dan Shectman, Justice Dalia Dorner and Dalia Itzik. The deadline for submitting one’s name is midnight 27 May, the eve of 27 Iyar 5774
