Presidential elections in Israel have been set for 12 Sivan 5774, corresponding to June 10, 2014. Shas’ Moetzas Gedolei Torah is expected to meet to decide which candidate to back in the race.
The party’s MKs will present their viewpoint, the candidate they believe is most suited for the post. While the MKs may have different candidates in mind, the decision will be made by the rabbonim shlita and that person will receive Shas’ 11 votes. At present it appears the faction members are indeed divided between the candidates and the rabbonim will have to render a decision instructing the MKs who to back in the vote.
At present the candidates in the race include Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, Reuven Rivlin and Meir Sheetrit. Former Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik, Nobel Prize laureate Dr. Dan Shectman and retired President of the Supreme Court Dalia Dorner may also announce their candidacy for the post to become Israel’s 10th president.
