PA Turning Electric Debt into a Political Issue

abaslThe Israel Electric Company is no longer willing to carry the debt incurred by the E. Jerusalem Electric Company, which provides electricity to subscribers in the eastern capital, Ramallah, Yericho and other areas. While subscribers pay the utility company, it does not pass the money to the Israel Electric Company. Hence the accumulated bill has reached a staggering 1.5 billion shekels.

Security authorities fear that when homes are cut off in eastern Yerushalayim, residents will attempt to damage the electric infrastructure and appropriate preparations are underway.

In line with the PA (Palestinian Authority) methodology, officials in Ramallah are working to turn this into a political matter. PA officials are calling on international experts to examine the bill, denying the legitimacy of the charges claimed by Israel Electric. PA officials feel the recent agreement signed with Hamas has prompted Israel to pressure Israel Electric to pull the plug on the PA. The PA warns cutting power will result in civilians being left without electric, including medical facilities and industry.

  1. One curiosity in this situation is why the Palestinian Authority does not seek a different supplier of electricity, e.g., Jordan or Syria. One answer might be that Jordan and Syria are unwilling to support their brother Arabs.

Another curiosity is why commenters 1 and 2 would rather hurl insults than follow my example of carefully reasoned thought.

  2. Who’s fault is this

Is the government of Israel would hold this gang called the PA to normal standards there would be no amount owing

The basic problem the government does not feel in their hearts the land of Israel belongs to them.

Therefore they try to be nice guy and hope the Arabs will finally agree to say they too belong there

Guys remember the only right a Jew like Peres from Poland has to Israel is the the creator said so

  3. bklynmom, moeisrael: The people are paying their bills to E Jerusalem Electric Company, but they are not transferring it to The Israel Electric Company.

  4. #3 maybe because your way only continues to empower the PA. If you actually were able to see things clearly then you might have different attitudes

I suppose then you should be able to stop paying your bills with no consequences. Funny how those like you think one thing against the Jews then against others

  5. Re comment no. 7: I am not as befuddled as you suggest. One reason that Israel Electric Company has not cut off power is because it would prompt civil chaos. As commenter no. 6 pointed out, Palestinian consumers are paying their bills to the Palestinian electric company, which is primarily a reseller of Israeli Electric’s juice. The deadbeat is the Palestinian electric company, but the persons who would be directly impacted by a cut-off of electricity would be their customers. At some point, supporters of the Palestinian electric company (e.g., Russia, Egypt, whoever) might be compelled to cover the Palestinian electric bill, so that there is no long-term financial harm to IEC. You and I don’t know all the ins and outs of electric service in Eretz Yisrael, and my point is that the situation is more complicated than your relationship with your electric utility.

And, as I pointed out, the Palestinian authorities have chosen, for reasons I do not know, to get their electricity from Israel, rather than Jordan or Syria. Maybe Israel is happy with that arrangement – it keeps the Palestinians non-aligned with their Arab neighbors and brothers, keeps the Palestinians dependent on Israeli resources, and maybe even yields a profit – if and when the bill is paid – to IEC.

So who do you think sees things more clearly – you or me?
