MK (Yesh Atid) Yaakov Peri, a former director of the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) has submitted an objection to the Ministerial Law Committee which on Sunday passed a bill seeking to prevent the release of murderers who acted with premeditation.
The law seeks to grant the nation’s courts the authority to sentence a convicted murderer who acted with premeditation, including terrorists, to life imprisonment without parole or presidential pardon.
Peri’s objection filed with the ministerial committee delays the bill from moving to Knesset for its first vote there. Opposing the bill along with Peri is party colleague Health Minister Yael German and Justice Minister (The Movement) Tzipi Livni, who chairs the committee.
Bayit Yehudi leader Economy Minister Naftali Bennett said “delaying the bill is a stain on Yesh Atid’s record. Every day the bill is delayed lives are in danger. We will use all means at our disposal [to move the bill forward] including delaying bills from Yesh Atid”.
