TRAFFIC ALERT: Bridge Repair Closing Part Of NJ Turnpike Extension

njtpMotorists heading out of the Holland Tunnel are finding their way to the New Jersey Turnpike is closed.

The state Department of Transportation says a hole was discovered Tuesday morning on the upgrade where vehicles enter the Newark bay extension of the Turnpike heading west.

DOT spokesman Tom Feeney says the hole is about one foot in diameter, but it’s forcing road crews to replace an entire 7-by-12-foot bridge deck panel. He says concrete will have to be poured and reinforced with steel, and then will have to dry.

The portion of road is expected to be closed until Wednesday morning.

Traffic is being detoured onto Route 139. Vehicles can still get on the Turnpike extension at Exit 14B near the Liberty Science Center or at Exit 14A in Bayonne.
