Kiryas Joel Considers Hike In School Taxes To Accommodate Busing Children To Private Yeshiva

sbusFamilies in Kiryas Joel are looking at a tax increase of more than 12 percent if next year’s school budget is approved.

District Superintendent Joel Petlin says the increase is because more money is needed to bus around 800 students to the private yeshiva Sheri Torah in Monroe. Families could end up paying an additional $220 a year.

Petlin says private busing was initially included in tuition for Sheri Torah, but families were asked to apply for public transportation to keep costs down.

No one at Sheri Tevah was available for comment. The Kiryas Joel school budget comes to a vote on May 20.

  1. 1) ALL Schools in KJ are private (besides for the (Special Ed) Dept) schools and all get buses.

    2) The name is not “Sheri Torah” as you can see on the building on YouTube

    3) While this so called “Sheri Torah” is technically in Town of Monroe, it is still the same exact distance and proximity than all the other schools that are in KJ

    So why the hysteria ?

  2. Bus companies and drivers need to be paid, they are paid through taxes. That’s how it works in every county!!
