The Ministerial Law Committee on Sunday, 11 Iyar 5774 approved a bill sponsored by MK Ayelet Shaked seeking to prevent the future release of murderers from Israeli prisons. Shaked’s bill will empower the judicial system to sentence murderers to life in prison without any possibility of parole or presidential pardon. The bill seeks to foil future terrorist releases by Israeli governments.
The ministers backing the bill included Gideon Saar, Gilad Erdan, Limor Livnat, Uri Ariel, Uri Orbach, Yair Shamir, and Sofer Landver. Saar explained the Shamgar Committee made this same recommendation in the past. He explained the bill does not just pertain to terrorists, but all acts of premeditated murder.
The bill will now continue on the process to be presented in Knesset for a preliminary vote. Labor party officials announced they will mount tenacious opposition to the bill.
