A long battle has come to an end and citizens of Israel can register a victory against the nation’s water authority. The battle was headed by the Knesset Economic Affairs Committee, particularly Labor MKs Eitan Cabel and Itzik Shmuli. Water Authority Deputy Director Tami Shore earlier in the week announced the authority will no longer permit cutting water to residents to fail to pay their bill.
The authority will submit the necessary paperwork to permit the Knesset Economic Affairs Committee to vote in new collection regulations for water companies, which will no longer include cutting a subscribers water off for nonpayment.
Shmuli called the victory a major parliamentary accomplishment as so many Israelis who are finding it harder to pay bills find themselves without water. Committee Chairman MK Dr. Avishai Braverman praised the water authority and the committee’s determination. He explained cutting off one’s water is not a moral act and eliminating this option from collection officials has been long overdue.
