Chareidi MKs to Meet with Defense Minister Ya’alon

yaalonThe new chareidi induction center at Tel Hashomer is scheduled to open on Tuesday, 29 Nissan 5774. In stage one, bnei yeshivos 22-year-old and older will report there to receive their deferment from military service.

During the course of the year bnei yeshivos 18-22 will most likely be called to report there as well if they wish to receive a delayed draft status to permit them to continue their limud Torah. The IDF is working to calm fears and opposition surrounding the exclusively chareidi induction center, aware of the strong opposition among many prominent rabbonim. IDF officials fear the admorim will decide not to permit their chassidim to report at all, and this will result in a new most unwanted reality.

Rabbonim and admorim have been meeting and based on unofficial reports, a number of rebbes feel talmidim should no longer report to induction centers, favoring a more radical response following the passing of draft bill into law. Another meeting of the Moetzas Gedolei Yisrael of Agudas Yisrael, Shas and Degel Hatorah may occur, during which the rabbonim shlita will have to decide how to instruct the tzibur to respond and if one hashkafa will be accepted by the entire chareidi community.

As a result of the new reality accompanied by a growing IDF desire to allay fears among rabbonim, the heads of the chareidi parties are planning to meet with Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, who today is still viewed as a man of reason. MKs Moshe Gafne, Yaakov Litzman and Aryeh Deri will represent their parties in the meeting.

  1. They are asking yeshiva students to sign up now in order to get a deferment (postponement) in return for agreeing to future service in the IDF. It is not surprising that those opposed to military service are advocating a policy of zero cooperation.
