On-Duty NYPD Officer Charged With DWI After Shooting Partner

nypdn1An on duty NYPD detective accidentally shot his partner in the wrist in Queens overnight, and was charged with driving while intoxicated, police sources say.

Detective Jay Poggi shot his partner, both assigned to the 75th Precinct, in the wrist at about 1:50 a.m. Thursday morning.

Police say Poggi and his partner were driving to a Queens location as part of an investigation when he accidentally fired his .38 caliber revolver.

The partner, a 12 year veteran, was shot in the wrist.

The shot officer was rushed to Jamaica Hospital for treatment and is listed in stable condition.

Officials say Poggi refused to submit to a breath-alcohol test following the shooting. He was charged with driving while intoxicated

The NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the incident.

  1. Doesn’t this article just give you that “warm all over” feeling? I feel so confident that the police can handle any and all problems that occur.

    LOL

How the heck does the cop accidentally fire his .38 caliber revolver? And why was the gun outside of his holster (as it had to be in order for him have ‘accidentally’ fired it)?

Aside question: do NYPD officers still carry revolvers? I thought all cops used semi-auto pistols. Maybe someone knows the answer? I’m just a bit surprised, that’s all.

  2. @yaakov doe

If you look at a map, the 75th precinct of Brooklyn is meere blocks away from the border of Queens…………

  3. He was only charged with DWI.

Apparently it is not illegal to drunkedly draw your gun and shoot your partner, or for that matter to be drunk while on duty (not that it would make any difference in the way they behave.)
