Head of Shas’ Council of Torah Sages HaGaon Harav Shalom Cohen Shlita met with President Shimon Peres. During the motzei yomtov Maimouna event in the Har Nof home of Aryeh Deri, Rav Cohen expressed words of praise for Peres, questioning why he decided to step down at the end of his term in July 2014.
Also present at the event were Rishon L’Tzion HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Yosef Shlita, HaGaon HaRav David Yosef Shlita, HaMekubal Rav Binayahu Shmueli Shlita, Kosel Rav Shmuel Rabinowitz, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, the president and Shas MKs.
Cohen explained that Deri told him that it was Peres who was behind enabling bnei Torah to declare limud as their full time profession, permitting them to continue their limudim instead of entering the IDF all of these years.
“Tell me, why are you leaving the presidency” asked the rav. Mr. Peres explained his term is running out and he is clearing the way for his successor.

You know, it’s kind of ironic that one who calls Shomrei Torah uMitzvos “Amalek” and a “Bayit shel Goyim” lavishes such praise on a Mechalel Shabbos who has done much to create/influence the secular nature of the Israeli society…
