Gafne Comments on Destruction of N’vei Yaakov Shul

gafniMK Rabbi Moshe Gafne commented following the Jerusalem municipality demolition of a N’vei Yaakov shul on Monday morning 7 Nissan. The shul, Heichal Nissim, located in the chareidi Kaminetz area, was built on an area designated for a new yeshiva city officials explained, citing that after numerous efforts to reach agreement with the gabbai to find another venue for the shul failed, the demolition order was carried out.

Gafne stated that anyone who voted for Mayor Nir Barkat and electing him to a second term in office bears a portion of the responsibility for the shul’s destruction.

While Shas officials remained silent following the demolition of the Sephardi shul, Gafne was quite vocal in his criticism and decried the city’s actions. he accuses the city of acting to remove chareidi schools and shuls while the city turns a blind eye to illegal structures in the secular community.

  1. Which yeshiva was supposed to be built there? Was the shul built on someone else’s property with reshus, or without reshus?

its a complex situation. I’ve davened at the shul several times.
In Israel, when neighborhoods are built, the government sets aside areas for schools shuls and housing. This area was set aside many years ago (when neve yaakov – kaminetz was built) for a ashkenasi beis yaakov. The land was sitting empty ever since (unknown to me why) and this kehila decided to establish trailers NEXT to the beis yaakov area. Now, really the area that the shul trailers were located weren’t occupying the beis yaakov area but being that the site is on a hill, the whole area needs to be lowered to properly build the school. Its hard to understand unless you’ve seen the site. It seems 20 years ago when they brought the trailers there, they had permission. The rest is the argument….

  3. you can see that Kelerman from degel hatorah is the one getting the death threats not Barkat. Barkat actually saved the shul from their hands for over a year!
