Yated Neeman Gives Shas’ Deri Semicha

derThe daily Yated Neeman on Sunday, 6 Nissan 5774 referred to Shas leader Aryeh Deri as “rabbi” for a first time in many years.

In a Yated report of a city council meeting in Beit Shemesh attended by Deri, he is referred to as “Shas leader Rabbi Aryeh Deri”. The same title was granted to Shas MK Avraham Michaeli.

As a result, Deri only appears with the title “rabbi” in his party’s Yom L’Yom newspaper, which Deri controls.

  1. Seriously? While this is all quite “fascinating,” who cares? and why is this a news item? (The heading is also quite lame and derogatory for no apparent reason)

  2. That you call news!!!!
They are no different than the American Yated who runs an “OLAM HAFUCH” Anyone who has a beard is called “RAV”. Very Chasuv Rabbonim who are clean-shaven are grudgingly given the title Rabbi..and everyone else (whether they have semicha or not, are referred to as Mr. and maybe sometimes R’ (Reb).

  3. 1. I wouldn’t call it “smicha” – since that phrase refers to graduation from being trained as a “rabbi” in modern parlance. It’s a very bad and sarcastic headline that misses the point.

    2. It indicates shifting alliances. Shas under R. Deri has clearly aligned it self with the hareidi population after years of trying to be on the zionist side of the border. While R. Yosef it was theoretically hareidi but practically zionists, and very anxious to divert patronage to their community – by refusing to support conscription of yeshiva students they gave up massive patronage. The change in editiorial style is a “welcome back”.

    3. Frum Jews have always preferred “indirect speech”. Such signs are a way in which “indirect speech” works. Remember that If Shas is support the hareidim, their numbers become much more significant.
