NYPD: NYC Officer Detained In India Over Bullets

nypdsNew York City police officials say an officer is being detained in India on a weapons charge because he had three bullets in his luggage.

The New York Police Department confirmed on Friday that Officer Manny Encarnacion was arrested in New Delhi on March 11.

The department says he was arrested after the bullets were discovered in his luggage. Police officials say he had put the bullets in a coat pocket while at the NYPD shooting range and forgot they were there.

The officials say that the 49-year-old Encarnacion has been barred from leaving India until the case is resolved. They say they’re working with the State Department to try to get him freed.

His next court date is April 17.

  1. I say throw the book at him and let him go to prison. He would do the exact same thing if he caught some “violate” some bogus NY gun law

  2. It might be worst for officer Manny Encarnacion had this happened at the Washington, DC, USA airport. The current laws there might be even more severe than those of India.
Possession of unregistered ammunition is a felony and even an unregistered misfired 12-gauge shotgun shell (dud) and a box of muzzleloader sabots (projectiles for muzzle loading rifles) can get you a year in jail and a $1000 fine..

So 3 rounds of active ammunition, not duds, might have really jacked Encarnacion,s jaws in the good ol’ US of A.

  3. India is probably paying back the NYPD for the harsh way they treated one of the Indian embassy’s staff members. Quid pro quo.

  4. The same happened to an absentminded lad from Har Nof, who forgot he had a bullet in his luggage who had it from the Israeli army.

He spent a few tough weeks in prison. His family paid about $10,000 to Indian lawyers & he got out.
