Governor Andrew Cuomo and the state legislature appear to have denied a request from Mayor Bill de Blasio for 160 new speed cameras, an integral part of his Vision Zero plan to dramatically reduce traffic deaths in New York City.
Legislative leaders have yet to publicly announce a budget agreement, but budget bills printed late Friday night and early Saturday morning do not include the requested cameras.
Right now, New York City has 20 speed cameras.

And DeBlaalaa was supposed to be for the little guy and end the “GOTCHA” campaign! What a fraud!
The more speed cameras around the safer — and slower — the streets.
Many other cities have found them an excellent source of revenue. The income from fines exceeds the litigation costs, though the program may have to end when word gets around that the cameras are not especially reliable (but done right, the vendor rather than city gets hit with class action for fraud).
Given the speed the New York City traffic moves, I doubt safety is a concern. If traffic moved any slower, everyone would prefer walking, which many do.
I thought that cramea was that peninsula in the Black Sea that Russia just stole from Ukraine. I guess YWN called it a “speed cramea” because the takeover was so quick.
akuperma: The speed limit in NYC is 30 MPH. Anything above is speeding. So while it may seem “slow” to your highway-trained eyes, it is over the limit and ticketable.
