Report: Nachman Caller Planning Run Against Dov Hikind

caller

According to a report in the NY Observer, Nachman Caller, an attorney and Republican district leader, is planning to run against Assemblyman Dov Hikind, sources familiar with Mr. Caller’s plans tell the Observer.

If Caller goes ahead with the bid, it would be the first significant challenge that Mr. Hikind, a conservative Democrat, has faced in many years.

It’s interesting to note, that in Hikinds previous election, Caller had endorsed Hikind. YWN had reported at the time (August 2012) that ‘Community First’, a group of active voters in the district headed by it’s founder Nachman Caller, had delivered 2,400 signatures of voters in the community – who enthusiastically pledged to support Assemblyman Dov Hikind on the ‘Community First’ party line in the last election.

Caller also considered running against Simcha Felder for the so-called “Super-Jewish Senate district” that was created by the New York State Senate Republicans. Caller considered running as a Republican.

Additionally, Rabbi Caller jumped into the 2010 race to replace Councilman Simcha Felder who was vacating his council seat. Caller dropped out of the race suddenly, and left Councilman David Greenfield and his opponent Joe Lazar to battle it out. In that race, Lazar was crushed by Greenfield, despite Lazar having tremendous support by many “Askonim” and of what was previously considered “prominent community organizations”.

  1. He has virtually no chance of winning.

    Secondly, it is assur to take away a Yid’s job, despite any secular “democratic” ideals to the contrary.

  2. No one has a chazakah on a political post for longer than the term that they’re originally elected that is the given understanding from the begining

  3. all hikind’s negatives and lunacy notwithstanding;

    1. a republican in democrat controlled assembly is virtually powerless.

    2. it would be silly to replace a veteran with many connections, with an inexperienced freshman.

  4. If a yid freelancer is hired for 6 months which is renewed repeatedly for 3 month increments, halachicly you cannot go to that vendor and compete against the freelancer after one of his 6 month terms expire to take away the job from him.

  5. Reb Nachman is a good guy but at this point, he can’t be taken seriously anymore. How many times can he declare that he’s in a race and then after a few weeks, when he’s down in the polls, he’s back out? At least the Tischlers, Hanon, Storobin, Lazar, etc…didn’t act like whimps and back out. Running for office is not a joke!

  6. “…tremendous support by many “Askonim” and of what was previously considered “prominent community organizations”.
    Am I supposed to be impressed by “askonim”, “prominent” et al , aka’s for machers and hockers?

  7. Chachom: you clearly dont understand how that halacha works…how does Israel function at all then? There are rabbis replacing rabbis all the time.

  8. Hikind is a load voice who thinks he represents all Yiddin. He has done little in Albany during his many years there, so a freshman Republican wouldn’t make much difference as long as he courts the media and holds frequent press conference on non legislative issues.

  9. After 28 years you would think he chairs a powerful committee. If mr. Called gets on one committee that would be one more than we have with the incumbent
