Israel Removes Age Ceiling for Organ Recipient Eligibility

organIsrael’s National Organ Transplant Authority has decided that beginning next month there will no longer be an age limit regarding one’s eligibility to receive a donor organ. The decision was unanimous to accept the recommendation of the public committee addressing transplants and this means one’s eligibility to become an organ recipient will not include one’s age as has been the case to date.

Under the new regulation, organ recipient hopefuls will be added to the national registry without age consideration. A patient’s overall medical condition and other pertinent data will be part of the consideration towards a final decision but age will no longer be factored in.

To date, eligibility to become a recipient for a lung, liver or heart was limited to citizens up to the age of 65. One of the more famous organ recipients who did not qualify was former Mossad Director Meir Dagan, who had to fly to another country to have a liver transplant.

Organ donor officials point out the decision will lead to an increase in the number of Israelis that will be on the national list of patients hoping to become organ transplant recipients.

  1. Since the demand of organs will increase, Israel needs more donors as well! More Israelis and Jews worldwide should sign up to the Halachic Organ Donor Society (www.hods.org).
