Porush Warns of Consequences of Dividing Beit Shemesh

porMK Meir Porush warns a division of Beit Shemesh may lead to the same occurring in Yerushalayim. Porush’s comments were voiced amid a small but growing number of Beit Shemesh residents calling to spit the city into two, with half for the chareidim and half for the dati leumi and secular residents.

On a practical note, many have already pointed out this is not possible since despite being large areas of an exclusive population, many areas of older Beit Shemesh are integrated.

Porush on Wednesday, 17 Adar II sent a letter to Interior Minister Gideon Saar in which he calls on the minister to reject the plan to divide the city outright. He explains the city held democratic elections and there is no reason to accept such a request.

“It is no secret that interested parties turned the world around to compel second elections. As it is known, the polls were open from the early morning until late at night, unhindered and without complaints. Every resident was entitled to exercise his right to vote for the preferred candidate. Ultimately, it became clear that the incumbent mayor, Rabbi Moshe Abutbul was reelected as mayor. Now as I have heard, I ask you as the minister of the interior to announced that you are adamantly opposed to calls to divide Beit Shemesh into two”.

Porush continues, warning that setting such a precedent is likely to result in similar requests around the country, and chas v’sholom leading to a call to divide Yerushalayim into three, religious, secular and for the Arabs.

  1. Not only is old Beit Shemesh integrated, but even RBS A is well integrated between Chareidim and DL, etc. with a probably Chareidi majority in RBS A.

Nevertheless these secessionists think they can take RBS A (with its large Chareidi residents) with them in their new non-Chareidi town.

  2. A BS/RBS split might serve as a model for a East Jerusalem/West Jerusalem split in a peace deal with the Arabs giving them part of the city.

  3. of course he is against the split since if that happens the chererdie halve will have not have the taxes that the DL pays to support them

  4. A split will not accomplish any imaginary goals.

With these warning bells loudly ringing, the Mayor should extend his hand with a willingness to be the MAYOR for the entire city and provide needs to all community residents.
