Are the we subject to the laws of the majority?
A “no” answer results in the continuous sinas chinam and defamation of G-d’s name that we constantly experience and no amount of hasifas will cure it. We should not be surprised by it.
The emphasis seems to be on protecting we who are already fortified with Torah and neglecting those who are not.
Our great grand father Avraham was a rich man, yet he continued to engage in work as he learned. He went to war when needed.
Maybe our being in the army can elevate the whole country and not just ourselves. We may loose from our learning in the short term, but our impact in bringing others could be what we need in order for Mashiach to come.

You have a very valid point, however it seems like you are totally unfamiliar with the Israeli army.
There is no way possible anyone can be elevated let alone the whole country while serving in the Israeli army.
I see you got carried away with Moshiach there…
Listening to our gidolim is the only thing we need IN ORDER FOR MOSHICH TO COME!
Marvin:
This is theoretically a nice thought. The main problem is that our gedolim have nixed that idea in no uncertain terms, both then and now.
Presumably, their main objection seems to be that one may not subject himself to shmad, which is what IDF service amounts to, matter how otherwise logical are the sevaras to join the IDF.
