In a flagrant disregard for Kavod Ha’Torah, Eli Cohen’s campaign – apparently very nervous about the unanimous support of Gedolei Yisrael, both Israeli and American, for Moshe Abutbol – is circulating material that gives the impression that Rav Ovadyah Yosef zt”l was in favor of him being elected as mayor of Beit Shemesh. One of Rav Ovadya Yosef’s last letters that he wrote was in emphatic support of the Charedi candidate, Moshe Abutbol, and this sordid attempt to mislead the traditional, Sefardic Jews of Beit Shemesh is not only a gross act of disrespect, but is also a heinous act of hypocrisy, coming as it is from a campaign whose whole basis is supposed honesty, integrity, and rejection of anything smacking of the contrary.
Charedi activists in Beit Shemesh note that they are practically overwhelmed by the deliberate and unremitting propaganda campaign of smear and delegitimization that the secular camp has consistently been pushing against Abutbol and the Charedi community as a whole. The focus of that smear campaign has obviously been the assertion that Moshe Abutbol, the “extremist”, stole the first round of elections by directing or encouraging a broad effort of voter fraud. This despite the fact that not one iota of evidence was presented to that effect.
Abutbol has engaged lawyers who are in the process of suing Cohen and his supporters for libel/character-assassination, and his campaign managers are constantly sending warning letters to Cohen’s camp, cc’d of course to the police, in response to many other illegal practices that the Cohen campaign is involved in.

On a daily basis I get propaganda from the Abutbol side that is 100% sheker. Claims that buses will operate in RBS on shabbos, claims that no rabbanim support Eli, claims that Eli will run concerts in RBS parks on shabbos. Total sheker.
Neither side is clean.
