Shas Ousted from Tel Regev Cemetery Council

shasIn his capacity as Minister of Religious Affairs, Naftali Bennett has appointed Aryeh Ferjione to head the Tel Regev Cemetery Council, ousting Shas affiliated Nissim Ochayon. The appointment goes into effect on Sunday, Rosh Chodesh Adar II 5774. Ferjione is a veteran activist in the dati leumi community and a former mayor of Tirat HaCarmel.

The Tel Regev Cemetery is the major one in the Haifa/Krayot area and one of the largest cemeteries in Israel. The beis hachaim is located between Yagur and Somech Junctions.

The appointment is viewed as part of Bayit Yehudi’s effort to replace the old guard with members of the dati community as Shas did when it was control of the ministry.

  1. The problem with the government running cemetaries is that they are being run by whomever rune the goverment. Don’t be shocked if some future government appoints people who are not Shomer Mitsvos. Frum Jews should desire autonomy, rather than worrying about getting a piece of the government’s pie.
