Prominent Dati Leumi posek HaGaon HaRav Shlomo HaKohen Aviner Shlita spoke with Moti Lavi of Kol Berama Radio on Thursday morning, 27 Adar I 5774. Rav Aviner announced that he personally plans to attend the Million Man Atzeres that is set to take place on Sunday, Rosh Chodesh Adar II 5774 at 16:00.
Rav Aviner is planning to take part in the atzeres to decry the Chilul Hashem, ongoing efforts by the government to compel talmidei and avrichei yeshivos to give up a life of limud Torah to serve in the IDF.
“Just as the people need an army, the nation requires Torah, gedolei Torah and those committed to limud Torah”. The rav feels talmidei chachamim must receive a draft deferment and this is the decision of roshei yeshiva. The roshei yeshiva must decide who must sit and learn. “While it is a mitzvah to serve in the army, we must permit one to blossom into a talmid chacham. Nothing will be accomplished by force. This is not the way. Politicians are trying to compel a change.”
Rabbi Aviner feels the dati leumi community should attend for the atzeres is a tefilla event and not political but does not “call on them” to do so explaining this is not his custom.

To understand the difference requires an understanding of the difference between Dati and Charedi customs. Dati rabbis generally do not issue mandates on non-halachic matters; Rav Aviner is no exception.

Rav Aviner *is* one of the Gedolei Yisrael.
If the Dati Leumi break with the Bennett-Lapid-Netanyahu coalition, Bennett is, as they say in American slang, “going up the creek without a paddle” and will quickly get dumped. A big chunk of the Dati Leumi is shocked that their allies in the war against hareidim turned out to be anti-Torah.
This is not so different than in Germany where many assimilated German Jews thought Hitler was only out to get the “ootjuden” (East European, often religious Jews) and were shocked when it turned out the Nazis didn’t even like assimilated German Jews.

Bechadray Chareidim reports that the Rabbanaim Shapira, Eliyahu, Aviner, and Tau, all prominent Chardal Rabanim will be attending the Atezeres on Sunday. In addition, the Eida Hachareidis will be attending. This is a wall to wall support of the Atzeres from the entire Torani world.
