Donald Trump’s public flirtation with running for governor is being criticized by a potential Republican rival.
Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino says Wednesday that Trump needs to end “this circus stuff” and say he’s running for governor or not.
Astorino has yet to declare that he’s running, though he is traveling the state and has created a campaign committee. Astorino is expected to announce his decision by the end of the month.
Polls have shown either man would face an uphill race challenging Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Astorino also claimed to have the most state party support.
Michael Cohen, special counsel to Trump, says Astorino appears to be perpetuating the media hype to create name recognition. And Cohen says Trump has more party support.

Don-boy has ostensibly made his position clear: He will run for governor if the Republican party hands him the nomination on a silver platter. That is how Don-boy got started in real estate, and it is natural for him to adopt the same strategy when starting a political career. That of course will not happen, as Republican Party leaders do not hand their support without striking a bargain, and there are 62 county leaders with whom bargains are needed. Don-boy is the nominal (maybe even the actual, for all I know) author of a book on deal-making, but I don’t think any deal-makers actually learned their deal-making skills from that book.
Mr. Astorino wants Don-boy to get out of the spotlight so that Mr. A can get on with his campaign. As I doubt Don-boy actually wants the job of governor, Don-boy’s timetable for stopping his gubernatorial antics is tied more to his promotion of his TV show than to the good of the party he says he prefers.
So let’s calm down and enjoy the antics. Nobody really wants to think about the substantive issues in the New York governor’s race anyway. Mr. A probably benefits from a delay in the start of the public portion of the campaign.
