Authority Chairman Apologizes for NJ Traffic Mess

gwb.jpgThe chairman of a bistate authority at the center of a political payback scandal has apologized to the public for traffic jams orchestrated by members of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s administration.

David Samson says the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is “deeply sorry for the inconvenience caused to our travelers.”

Samson, a Christie appointee, promised to give the public “a complete picture” of the lane closings near the George Washington Bridge. He has been subpoenaed by legislators looking into the closures, which were apparently meant as political payback to the mayor of Fort Lee, N.J.

Samson spoke during the authority’s monthly meeting. Earlier, members of the new Special Oversight Committee said the authority should apologize. The committee was created after a former Port Authority executive ordered the lanes closed.
