Israel: Speed Limit Likely to be Upped to 120 KPH

mishtaraA Transportation Ministry committee is recommending increasing the speed limit on roads that are currently 110 KPH (66 MPH) to 120 KPH (72 MPH). This includes portions of Highway 1, 431, 2, 4, and 6. Experts report the average speed driven on Route 6 (Kvish 6) is 130 (78 KPH), citing the speed limit is not enforced.

The final decision will be made in consultation with police and National Road Safety Authority Director Ron Moskowitz, as Moskowitz appears inclined to support the increase in the speed limit as statistical data shows the increase from 100 KPH to 110 KPH has not resulted in an increase in vehicular accidents. Actually, there was a decline in the number of accidents in 2013 as well as fewer accident-related injuries.

It appears the new 120 KPH speed limit will begin on Kvish 6 followed by Route 431.
