The National Weather Service is warning of dangerous near-blizzard conditions as a nor’easter swirls into the tri-state that is expected to deliver a double punch of snow that could accumulate more than a foot in some areas by the time the system moves out Friday.
Through 11 a.m.: New York City and surrounding suburbs get smacked with wet snow and sleet, possibly as fast as 3 inches per hour. The National Weather Service says very heavy snow is coming down with wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph, resulting in near-zero visability at times.
11 a.m. to 7 p.m.: A push of milder ocean air will change precipitation to light rain and sleet along the coast and in New York City. Temperatures in the lower 30s will allow road solutions to melt snow and roadways should be passable.
7 p.m. into Friday morning: A second round of snow is expected across the area, with an additional 3 to 6 inches possible. New York City and Long Island should see the heaviest snowfall. Icy roads are possible.
