Interior Minister Gideon Saar has approved permanent residency status in Israel for 221 children of foreign workers aged 8-23.
Most of the children were born in Israel and all have been integrated into the Israeli education system. Their parents’ countries of origin include Ghana, Turkey, the Philippines, Nigeria, the US, Germany, Congo, Moldova, Russia and Colombia.
The 221 applications nearly complete all dealings with the applications of foreign workers’ children that were submitted pursuant to the Cabinet’s 1 August 2010 decision.
Saar said, “In my decision, I took into account the considerable dealing with the applications of those children who grew up here and are, in practice, Israelis. We also considered their not having been deported over the years since the cabinet decision and until the inter-ministerial committee completed its work. The decision stems from a balanced and humanitarian approach that took into account Israel’s values as a Jewish and democratic state.”

Sure, let them stay… what possible threat could a couple hundred foreign people pose to the “Jewish character” of the state. After all, it’s not like in 10 years they will have multiplied exponentially, and brought their friends and relatives with them… it’s not like it’s a decision of any precedence. It’s not like Israel has any sort of problems with the eleven thousand Muslim Bedouins that were allowed to remain in Israel in 1967 that now number over two hundred thousand, and double in population every 15 years… no problem…
