While Finance Minister Yair Lapid was pleased to hear the Supreme Court’s decision on Tuesday, 4 Adar I 5774 halting funding for avreichim, his pleasure was short-lived.

Lapid announced shortly following the publicized decision that his office was going to halt yeshiva funding for February, but to his surprise and disappointment, the funds for this month have already been allocated. It is likely that by the time March’s funding is due, the new chareidi draft law will be in place so for the Yesh Atid party leader the victory fell short of his expectations as he cannot place a stranglehold on avreichim this month.

The announcement came from Lapid shortly after the court’s decision via his Facebook page, writing “I have instructed the treasury this evening to immediately halt funding to yeshivos whose talmidim are not serving in the IDF”.
