The ‘Do You Enjoy Talking to the Wall’ Campaign

1Har Habayis organizations have launched a new campaign an effort to encourage many more Jews to visit Har Habayis, questioning “Do you enjoy talking to the wall” in its reference to the Kosel. They explain that in essence, the Kosel lacks religious significance and instead of being mispallel at the Wall, one should be joining the fight of those yearning to be mispallel on Har Habayis.

The flyers being distributed emphasize that we have become too accustomed to the outer wall instead of the “true Holy Site”, seeking to encourage the tzibur to awaken to the fact that on Har Habayis there are mosques and pointing out that “any non Jew may enter and only Jews are barred from praying and have restricted visiting hours”.

“We have the ability to change this disgraceful reality and stop this awful Chilul Hashem! We must visit Har Habayis and strengthen our demand for Jewish sovereignty on the Mount”.

The names of many prominent rabbonim appear on the flyer, including Rabbi Dov Lior Shlita, Rabbi Chaim Druckman Shlita, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu Shlita, Rabbi Tzefanya Drori Shlita, Rabbi Yisrael Ariel Shlita, Rabbi Nachum Eliezer Rabinowitz Shlita, Rabbi Shalom Gold Shlita, Rabbi Yitzchak Shapira Shlita, and Rabbi Nachman Kahana Shlita to name a few.

Rabbi Chaim Navon, another rav in the dati leumi community, is quoted by Kippa responding to the campaign commenting “you are on the way to becoming a cult”.

Chief Rabbi David Lau and Rishon L’Tzion Yitzchak Yosef recently signed a psak renewing the prohibiting of visiting Har Habayis. The psak reminds the tzibur that Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook ZT”L banned Jews from visiting the holy site.

The chief rabbis point out that following the liberation of the Kosel and Har Habayis in the June 1967 Six Day War, 50 rabbonim signed a psak prohibiting one from visiting Har Habayis. The chief rabbis signed that psak along with gedolei hador.

Other former chief rabbis who prohibited visiting Har Habayis include Rabbi Avraham Kahane Shapira ZT”L, Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu ZT”L, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef ZT”L, Rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron, Rabbi Yonah Metzger, and Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar.

It must be noted that according to the Poskei Hador one is absolutely forbidden to visit the Har Habayis, and there is an Issur Kares for one that goes there.

Four years ago on Sukkos, President Shimon Peres paid a visit to the Sukka of Maran HaGaon Rav Elyashiv ZATZAL, where Rav Elyashiv called on the President to prevent Jews from visiting Har Habayis, stating it is an act that that is viewed as extremely provocative by the goyim. Maran stated everything possible must be done to avoid a religious war, and the provocateurs are playing with fire.

Maran is quoted as explaining to the president that Halacha forbids going onto Har Habayis but today, it is more than this, it is an act that may lead to a religious war and bloodshed.

  1. I don’t enjoy talking to a wall. I enjoy talking to Hashem while at the wall surrounding har habayis, being as I’m not allowed onto har hababyis itself. Seeing how the wall is soaked with tears, the wall in itself already absorbed enough kedusha to be a makom kodesh in it’s own right. If I were to talk to the wall, I’m sure the wall would have many stories to tell me.

  2. The 6 real –
biggest Gdolai Yisroel in the last 47 yrs mot one permitted it,NOT ONE. Date Leumi what that? Zionists— yes religious butwith the wrong torah Hashkafa, nebech>

  3. To ywn dont understand how u can put this article on your post r u helping them campaign something that it’s against the halocha

  4. #3 I do not believe this to be true. I would like the verified information.

Anyway check this out, also ask- Rav Dov Lior (allows), Rav Bar-Hayim (allows). I would like to check about Rav Shapira and Rav Eliyahu (both father and son).

And funny how you put Metzger in the list of the 6 “biggest Gedolim”. What does that even mean? See next post with link to Rambam, Raavad, Meiri and others. (I am posting this after this post because I do not know the policy with YWN and allowing limks to other sites).

  5. @torahyid
    1) Please check your grammar.
    2) Please describe what makes someone a “real -biggest Gdolai Yisroel”…….
    3) Who are the 6 ????
    4) “in the last 47 yrs”……Huh ?!?!?!?!?

  6. I think it’s time for YWN to stop putting the disclaimer “it must be noted…” There are poskei hador on both sides of the issue, as we see from this article, and it is not the place of YWN to decide which Rabbanim are the true poskei hador.

  7. To all the people involved in making this sign and drive to visit the Har Habayis:
“What do you do with the Zohar vol 2 page 2b which says in the name of R. Yehudah that the SHECHINAH never moved from the Kosel Hamarovie”
If you claim that you are just speaking to the wall, then what do you do with that Zohar??? I do NOT believe that all these Rabonim are ignorant of this famous Zohar. The organizers probably don’t really care for the truth of our Torah and just push their own agenda.
If some of these signatures are made up, then what else they are claiming is un-true ???????

  8. “according to the Poskei Hador one is absolutely forbidden to visit the Har Habayis, and there is an Issur Kares for one that goes there”

If this is true — and I question that it is — it is one of the reasons people ignore the poskei hador or at least statements in their name. Anyone who has been through the relevant mishnayot knows that the issur karet is only for a relatively small area! I am not learned enough to know what that area is, but I trust that the rabbis on the letter — and also Rabbi Dr. Moshe Tendler, who also regularly ascends to the Har HaBayit — know.

  9. id find it hard to beileve that rav shmuel eliyahu supported going up on the har when his own father didnt…

i suspect religious fanaticism to a extent which simply covers truth and creates falsehood

  10. Rav Ovadyah Yosef has a 12 page teshuva outlining all of the opinions on where the mokom hamikdosh is, since (as charliehall pointed out the area where one can incur the Isser Kares is relatively small) He shows that all of teh opinions differ on the exact spot and therefore RAV Ovadya Yosef PASKED that ONE MAY NOT STEP FOOT ANYPLACE ON THE HAR HABAYIS.

Do any of the people on the poster or other Rabbi know more that Rav Ovadya Yosef?

If one is honest one knows the answer to this and knows what he should (or should not) do!
