Documents released in the investigation into lane closures at the George Washington Bridge show members of Gov. Chris Christie’s inner circle were well-informed about the traffic jams that appear to have been orchestrated with political motivations.
A trove of emails and text messages released Friday show that a senior Christie adviser was forwarded an angry email from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive who ordered the lanes reopened. The executive also suggested the closures put the public at risk and violated federal and state laws.
Another email says Christie’s hand-picked chairman at the authority was said to helping retaliate against the executive who ordered the lanes opened. That executive was appointed by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The assemblyman leading the state legislative investigation says Christie could be impeached if he knew about the political gamesmanship.
