Mayor: More Apologies From Christie May Be Needed

chrThe mayor of the New Jersey borough whose residents were beset by traffic jams as apparent political payback says he accepts Gov. Chris Christie’s apology but also wants to see if more details emerge from investigations.

Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich said Thursday he believed the governor was sincere when he apologized about emails that seem to reveal his aide wanted highway lanes near the foot of the George Washington Bridge closed because the mayor wasn’t endorsing Christie.

Christie fired the aide Thursday morning.

Sokolich said he hopes Christie will apologize again if investigations reveal additional findings.

Christie plans to visit Fort Lee. The mayor urged the governor to delay the trip amid inquiries by the legislature and federal prosecutors.

  1. First of all, it was funny the first 10 times, i.e., a picture of Gov. Christie eating a donut. But it’s no longer funny, and it is a distraction from a serious issue. And Mr. Christie is entitled to some respect as a human being.

As for apologies, in addition to whatever apologies are due the mayor of Fort Lee, there are apologies due the thousands of drivers who lost thousands of hours because of a political temper tantrum or a political dirty trick, whether or not it was carried out on the order of Gov. Chrisite, or some overzealous underlings. Apparently no one died or suffered medically because of the politically induced traffic snafu, but clearly some people in Gov. Christie’s administration consider the people of New Jersey pawns in a political game.

I suspect that if a driver deliberately obstructed traffic, he could get a ticket, or maybe such a driver would have committed a misdemeanor. When public officials do the same thing by trickeration, that ought to be a felony. Perhaps it is, and perhaps it is an impeachable offense. Let the investigations proceed.

And, please, no more fat jokes at Gov. Christie’s expense. It is not nice, and it is not helpful.

  2. even if Gov Christie did not “know” anything what does it say about the quality of the people he chose for his office and his being on top of what is going on under his nose?

  3. I believe I heard earlier today that there was 1 ambulance who carried a patient that dies as a result of the heavy traffic. If thats true, this story is serious stuff.
