A security breach at Newark Liberty Airport has law enforcement and passengers shaking their heads. Now some are wondering if the airport itself is secure, or if anyone can get on the runways by just hopping a fence.

The electronic fence around Newark Airport is part of multimillion-dollar perimeter intrusion detection system, or PIDS, that is supposed to keep out criminals and terrorists by alerting authorities if there is a breach. But somehow a 24-year-old Jersey City man wearing women’s clothes managed to get inside the secure zone and all the way up to Terminal C, according to the Port Authority.

Port Authority police union president Paul Nunziato took us to the scene and explained what he believes happened: the man climbed over two fences, crossed two runways and active taxiways and then approached an airline worker, who called police.

The Port Authority said it is still investigating how Siyah Bryant got on airport property. The Port Authority insists the system worked: an alarm went off and Bryant was seen on security video. However, the agency is taking a close look at an employee who was supposed to monitor the system.

Authorities checked his name against wanted lists, slapped him with a misdemeanor trespassing summons, and let him go.

Passengers we spoke with were surprised that security on the outside doesn’t seem to be as tight as inside the terminals.
