Coldhearted, Contempt for Chareidim, or Plain Stupid?

charediThe levaya for 76-year-old Margalit Abadi was held early afternoon of 7 Teves 5774 in Har Menuchos. The crowd attending the levaya was rather large, but the levaya was delayed because a son, Chaim, was delayed. A policeman stopped 39-year-old Chaim as he was driving to the beis hachaim.

Even more bizarre is Chaim was following the chevra kadisha vehicle with the nifteres inside, but the policeman signaled him to pull over near the entrance of Yerushalayim. The policeman explained it was a routine inspection. Chaim responded he was in the middle of a levaya for his mother and he was following the aron. Chaim even showed the policeman the aveilus announcements that were printed.

Chaim told Kikar Shabbos at that point he and his wife the policeman would apologize and permit them to continue with the levaya since they were all wearing seatbelts and he did nothing wrong.

The policeman reportedly said “Your issues are of no interest to me and if you continue talking I will have to run you in.” Chaim reports at this point his wife became unraveled and began crying. They then told the policeman to write whatever summonses he wishes, but to let them continue with the levaya.

Realizing what was taking place the chevra kadisha and other vehicles pulled over and ran over to the policeman to explain the situation. He was not interested in hearing them and continued to hold Chaim and his wife.

One of the witnesses began videoing the events on his smartphone, which may have made the cop edgy. He used his own phone to photograph Chaim’s license and then permitted them to continue with the levaya. He did however delay the levaya by a half hour!

  1. What’s shocking isn’t the that an Israeli policeman pulled over someone in a funeral procession. That sort of inhumanity is par for the course for Israeli police who seem to be taught overreaction as part of their regular training.

No, what’s shocking is that no-one has bought about a true independent complaints commission to which the many out-of-control and barbaric policemen in Israeli can be held to account.

The Israeli police are about 150 years behind the rest of the civilised world.

so sorry they had to go through that tough scene at such a painful moment ……

  3. Not plain stupid but plain heartless evil. Since Lapid came to power secular blatant hatred towards chareidim is a disgrace and a shame and would not be tolerated anywhere in the world. This should be a clear sign how far religious Jews should keep from them. Nothing good can come from associating with them. Look what happened to Bennett for correlating with Lapid.

  4. This policeman should and must be held accountable for this vial act. Yidden are called Bn’ei Rachmonim. We are not animals bereft of feelings. Let the mayor of Jerusalem if he has any guts respond.

  5. So lemme understand this: Why is everyone making aliyah????? What’s wrong with NY, a city where an incident like this would likely NEVER happen…??

  6. “This is the hatred that the secularist have against frum yidden.”

No, some secular guy happens to be an idiot (aka rasha?), and it happens to be he’s in a position of authority. It’s not a reflection on the majority of secularists who really don’t care. There are some (many) leftist seculars who are very vocal and they get noticed. Most are quiet and are to occupied with trying to live their lives and pay their bills to spend time brewing hatred for the religious.

Here’s a similar story. Some bored kids (who are asured from playing basketball so they need to get out their energy,) blow up the garbage cans. No one tries to stop it with the rational, ‘obviously we denounce it. Why should I condemn them if nobody thinks they are the true chareidim? Everyone knows they’re bored kids’ Then you wonder why people think that all frum people blow up garbage cans.

Except in this story the other cops tried stopping him and anyway he’ll probably get fired so it’s not actually a reflection on anyone because it’s clearly only he who is the jerk. Spin it however you want but really it’s just a story of a heartless cop.
