Israel: How State Officials Assist in Belt Tightening

lapFinance Minister Yair Lapid has called to push off a planned salary raise but it would appear that for lawmakers in Yerushalayim, talk of a need for belt-tightening is just that, talk. Just days after the release of the Bituach Leumi annual poverty report, which shows over 800,000 children live under the poverty line, state officials will enjoy an increase in salary.

Economic realities aside, the salaries of lawmakers and state officials will enjoy a 1.8 – 2.5% increase in 2014. This includes the president, prime minister, cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, and of course, members of Knesset. This will result in a monthly salary increase ranging from 691 – 1,342 NIS.

Back in July lawmakers rejected a suggestion from Lapid, who called upon elected officials to vote themselves a 10% salary cut.

  1. Lapid should be charged with child abuse. Even most animals provide food for their young. On the otherhand, politics is very predetorial.

  2. Why are these tzaddikim cutting their salary raise when they can easily take it from their cut children budget, yeshiva and kollel budget? Don’t they deserve it most for being in session for 6-8 months a year working hard finding ways for the burden to be shared equally between chareidim and daati leumi without having to include secular draft evaders?
