Iran’s foreign minister has protested expanding U.S. economic sanctions against Tehran during a phone conversation with Secretary of State John Kerry.
The official IRNA news agency says Kerry called Zarif to discuss the nuclear deal reached between Iran and six world powers in Geneva last month. It didn’t say when the call took place.
IRNA quoted a statement issued by Iran’s Foreign Ministry Monday as saying Zarif “expressed Iran’s dissatisfaction” over a U.S. move to add more companies a sanctions list.
The White House says expanding economic sanctions against Iran to cover additional companies does not violate the Geneva deal. It says the decision represented actions based on existing sanctions and that the U.S. is committed to refraining from any new nuclear-related sanctions.
