Shas leader Aryeh Deri spoke with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) after the PA leader phoned to comfort Deri on the petira of Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L.
The PA leader reportedly told Deri that he and his people genuinely strive for peace and Deri reportedly responded that Israel is yearning for peace and the PA must prove it wants peace as it says.
Earlier in the day Deri met with newly-elected opposition leader Yitzchak Herzog, who unseated Shelly Yacimovich as the Labor party leader. The two agreed to work together towards toppling the current administration headed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

If Labor can suddenly decide it respects the right of people to refuse to serve in the military (not hard, most of the left don’t want to be in the IDF either, and switching to a de facto professional army has many advantages over a conscript army) – this could be very signficant.
