NYS Senator Wants Extra NYPD Services In Stores Tracked

nypdrState Sen. Daniel Squadron wants the NYPD to disclose the extra police services it provides to businesses in light of allegations of racial profiling at department stores.

The Daily News says Squadron’s proposal would require the mayor’s office to file an annual report listing any contracts for police services with businesses beyond normal protocol. The report would include the NYPD’s Paid Detail Unit. The program provides off-duty but uniformed police personnel to businesses for an hourly fee.

A NYPD spokesman declined to comment on Squadron’s proposal, which follows racial profiling allegations at Macy’s and Barney’s. But he says Barney’s has never registered for the Paid Detail Unit. He says Macy’s was registered in the program but that recent alleged incidents there didn’t involve officers in the unit.
