Barkat Commits to Close Businesses on Shabbos

nbaJerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat told Yahadut Hatorah officials that he remains committed to maintaining the city’s atmosphere on Shabbos and he will enforce the law compelling businesses to close.

This particular issue was one of the many clauses in the new coalition agreement between City Hall and the chareidi party. In addition, the city will “exhibit increased sensitivity” regarding cultural activities held on Shabbos.

City Hall released a statement that the “City emphasis will be on maintaining the status quo in matters of religion and the Jewish character of the city along with mutual respect for the various populations.”

  1. AND get police protection and manpower on Har Hazassim so that people can visit their parents, relatives in security.

Where are the Police? Are there funds allocated for security on the holy mountain? Who is preventing patrols in the area? Is it a political or security problem?
