MK Meir Sheetrit Sets His Sights On The Presidency

sheetMK (The Movement) Meir Sheetrit told the Knesset station that he is interested in running for president in the summer of 2014 when President Shimon Peres’ term expires.

Sheetrit, who was the treasury of the Jewish Agency for Israel for a number of years became a senior Likud MK, then shifting to Kadima and then again to The Movement, where he resides today.

Sheetrit explained that he is in the process of evaluating his support base if he officially enters the presidential race. When asked by Knesset TV “So you’re going to run against [former Knesset Speaker Reuven] Rivlin and Fouad, he responded “I have more experience and am younger than they are”.

Fouad refers to Labor MK Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, a veteran MK who has held numerous ministerial posts. He has been serving as a Labor MK since entering Knesset in 1984. He is a retired IDF brigadier-general.

Rivlin, a Likud elder, entered Knesset in 1988 while Sheetrit entered Knesset in 1981 and has served as Finance, Transportation, Education, Housing, Justice and Public Security ministers.
