HaGaon HaRav Meir Mazuz, Rosh Yeshivat Kisei Rachamim, recently wrote a letter of support for former Shas leader Eli Yishai. He clarified his words during shloshim events for Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L. Rav Mazuz also had harsh words for the Shas criticism against Kol Berama Radio, the party’s affiliate station.
The rosh yeshiva did not mince words when he was critical of the sudden animosity against Kol Berama and Rishon L’Tzion HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Moshe Amar Shlita.
“When pashkavilim are published against the radio station and Rav Amar Shlita, this does not add to the kovod of either side, and this may chas v’sholom lead to the party crumbling, the party which Maran ZT”L labored with his own fingers during 30 years.”

Rav Shach started the Shas Party, Rav Ovadia was appointed by Rav Shach to be its spiritual leader.

Although Rav Shach told his people to support Shas in its first try in 1984 because of his rift with Agudas Yisroel, I would not by any stretch of the imagination argue that Rav Shach appointed Horav Ovadia Yosef as leader of Shas. Rav Ovadia, was head and shoulders above all of the rest. And as his labors bore fruit, one can argue that he has had greater Siyata Dishmaya than any manhig in many centuries. If someone would like to argue the facts, go right ahead, present your case, I am willing to listen.
#2, just the opposite:
R’ Ovadia against the wishes of R’ Shach started the Shas Party. R’ Shach felt at that time it was premature to begin a S’fardi political party. R’ Ovadia showed him to be wrong.
With that bit of history straighten up, it was only the overwhelming personality of R’ Ovadia that kept the divergent forces within Shas together since their respect for him is greater than the mutual hatred that exists between the various groups within Shas.
The chances of Shas breaking up by the next election is very high seeing the fact that R’ Ovadia is no longer with us. The infighting and inner hatred between the various factions begins to come out in the open.
