Outgoing New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is strongly criticizing the city’s new voting process, saying “the days of the secret ballot are over.”
Bloomberg is fuming that the city’s new $95 million voting system allows poll workers to sneak a peek at a voter’s ballot. He said a Board of Elections worker glanced at his sheet when he placed it in the optical scanner machine last Tuesday.
The new system, which was introduced in 2010, requires voters to fill out a paper ballot and slide it face-up into the scanner.
The head of the Board of Elections says the mayor’s complaints will be reviewed.
Bloomberg will not say who he voted for in last week’s mayoral election. Democrat Bill de Blasio won and will succeed Bloomberg on Jan. 1.
