HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky said that Finance Minister Avigdor Leiberman’s plan to eliminate daycare subsidies for avreichim will not harm limmud Torah.
However, HaRav Chaim said that Lieberman and others in the government who enabled the decree will not be forgiven, as reported by Yisrael Hayom on Friday.
“There’s no forgiveness for whoever harms the children of Israel,” HaRav Chaim said. “Whoever has a part in these gezeiros will sit in Gehinnom.”
“The Torah is eternal and these gezeiros won’t stop limmud Torah,” HaRav Chaim continued. “There have been decrees over the years and Am Yisrael withstood them and continued to learn Torah.”
The Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Degel HaTorah published a letter on Friday against the government and warned that no one should cooperate with members of the government.

Larry, do you have any idea how many Jews or people Stalin killed? You may not believe it, but what Lieberman is doing may have a positive long term outcome.

I don’t think that anyone should expect the government to support their sitting in kollel. The government has no obligation to continue to subsidize limud hatora. The chilonim are paying the taxes and cannot be forced to contribute to the yeshiva world. It is gross error on the part of the frum community to demand it, and to expect to receive money to support their lifestyle.

Lieberman has blind hatred of Jews, not only Haredim. He has a deep inferiority complex and self hate. He has not accomplished anything that contributes to the State and the Jewish People. He only dreamt to be in charge of Finance in order to be able to put Gezerot on the ones that remind him that he is a Jew, which frustrates him.
Everyone always likes to say on his opponent that he will go to Ge’henum. It’s the easiest thing to say.
This government’s decrees will not harm limud Torah. Try as they may, Torah is forever and will not cease from the Jewish people. The problem is that the government is taking away a big merit-zchus- from the Midinah, and from the chilonim, and this is what we are worried about. It is in the zchus of Torah that we survive here and every chiloni taxpayer has a part in that.

The comparison to Stalin is, so far, exaggerated, but the fact is that Lieberman is waging war on the Torah. The daycare subsidy is available for every student who chooses not to work and instead to spend his days studying some useless subject such as Arabic literature or the culture of some pagan savages, but not to one who devotes himself to the only truly worthwhile subject, on which the whole world is sustained. Simple justice requires that they get at least the same treatment.
And yes, the government is obligated to support Torah learning, because what else is sufficient to preserve the country’s existence when so many are trying to destroy it? In what zechus has Israel not collapsed decades ago, if not that of the yeshivos and kollelim?
