Parties Pushing for Civil Marriage Bill

lapEach giving its own name, the Labor, The Movement and Yesh Atid parties are all pushing their own version of a civil marriage bill. All of these bills share certain components, such as permitting a couple to bypass a halachically valid keddushin and state recognition of to’eva unions R”L.

YESH ATID

Its bill is intended for anyone that has been disqualified from being married by the Chief Rabbinate system or any couple that simply prefers not to get married with rabbinical involvement. The party’s bill has not yet been presented.

THE MOVEMENT

The party views its version of the bill as a solution for people wishing to get married but have been disqualified by the Chief Rabbinate, primarily because at least one member of the couple was unable to prove Jewish roots. The bill also addresses same gender marriages. The bill was presented on Sunday, 30 Cheshvan 5774.

LABOR

This party’s version only addresses same gender couples, not people disqualified by the Chief Rabbinate. It too is being presented to the Ministerial Law Committee on Sunday, 30 Cheshvan.
