There are rare moments in a campaign when rivals come together in a unified manner. The first anniversary of Hurricane Sandy is one of these moments. Sunday evening, the Democratic and Republican candidate for mayor, Bill de Blasio and Joe Lhota, issued a joint statement asking the Campaign Finance Board to reschedule Tuesday’s debate to properly commemorate the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy.
“Tuesday marks the first anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, a tragic event that took dozens of lives, and caused enormous damage to the homes, businesses and communities of tens of thousands of people in New York City, and across the region,” the two candidates said in a statement released simultaneously. “This day should be marked with solemn reflection and remembrance. Today, we are joining together to call on the Campaign Finance Board to reschedule Tuesday’s debate to Wednesday. This is the most respectful and appropriate way to honor the memories of those who were lost, and to stand with those who are still struggling to recover.”
Speaking to reporters following a speech at the Young Israel of Far Rockaway 50th annual dinner, Mr. Lhota said that numerous reporters came up with the issue raised by Bill de Blasio in the morning, so staffers from both campaigns came together to request the debate be rescheduled for Wednesday. But it’s in the hands of the Campaign Finance Board, he said.
Mr. Lhota added that he did not speak to Mr. de Blasio about the matter.

The election campaign is over….they would have to find pictures of DeBlasio with a goat to change the outcome. They should keep the debate on Tuesday night and use the opportunity to discuss what changes still need to be made to avoid the types of damage and injury NYC incurred last year during the storm. Is the city better protected? What has been done to assure that the elderly in high rise buildings in the Rockaways will not be left helpless? What has been done at the hospitals whose emergencey generators didn’t function? Lets use the 1 year anniversay to discuss what has changed for the good.
