15-Year-Old Blocked from Flying to Uman

umanA 15-year-old male who defied his parents headed to Ben-Gurion Airport on Thursday, 20 Cheshvan, was determined to fly to Uman to the kever of Rav Nachman. While the youth’s parents instructed him not to fly, he told them he was determined and would not adhere to their words.

The young man learned that while he left the house and headed for the airport, his parents had the last word. They phoned border police stationed at the airport and explained the situation. The young man was flagged in the computer system and he was detained and prevented from boarding his flight by police at the airport in line with the wishes of his parents.

  1. The halacha clearly states that one cannot listen to one’s parents when they tell him to violate a mitzva. Does this include going to Uman too?

    🙂 🙂 🙂

  2. But less troubled than an Avreich who missed his own son’s Beris on Rosh haShono some years back to be in Uman for Rosh haShono, asking his Rabbi in Israel to be his Sheliach to take care of Beris arrangements on Rosh haShono.

  3. there needs to be a way to clean up these (what i call these Loshon Harah Blogs) and make this more of a what if
instead of the play by play

  4. #1, this is not a mitzvah but an aveira. First of all, this is not a reason to leave EY. As Rav Kook pointed out, if someone wants to go to kivrei tzaddikim, the greatest tzaddikim of all time are buried in the Maarat HaMachpela. Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach said that he went to Har Herzl. Secondly, if he was expecting yeshuot from Rabbi Nachman and planned to daven to him he was, in fact, going to do avoda zara.
