What Happened to Maran Rav Ovadia’s ‘Glima’?

HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT"L in his beis medrash --- Kuvien ImagesAccording to a report published by Yediot Achronot, all is not well in Har Nof’s 45 Kablan Street as the children of Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L are not exactly seeing eye-to-eye regarding the inheritance left by the gadol hador. In this case, it is more the sons as the daughters of the late posek understand Halacha will dictate matters of yerusha, however Yediot reports some of the daughters have turned to the children of Rav Yaakov ZT”L, asking that they vote to turn the inheritance over to all the children, not just the sons. Daughter Edna Bar-Shalom is quoted saying “According to Halacha, I do not inherit”.

The report states the expanded apartment of the late gadol hador is valued at a minimum of 5 million NIS. There is a plan to build a new building in Yerushalayim in memory of Maran, which will include a library, his vast library of over 40,000 seforim. There is the realization that all items that belonged to Maran ZT”L have significant value for collectors, including but not limited to his chair in the library, his seat in the beis medrash, his pens, and much much more. The report states the sons are already disputing just how many glima garments Maran owned, four or eight – questioning if some were taken.

There is machlokes over the money that will be yielded by the apartment sale, but that will not take place for at least a year since it states Maran instructed the family not to sell his home for as long as his neshama is still present.

Perhaps the highlight of the report is the fact that Maran’s gold trimmed glima has mysteriously disappeared, adding it is unknown if a family member has hidden it or if someone close to Maran managed to get in and remove it.

The report cites there is growing animosity towards Rabbi Moshe Yosef and Rebitzen Yehudit. Yediot states Rav Moshe owns the copyright to no less than 54 of the seforim released by Maran, many selling internationally. In addition Yediot reports eyes are directed towards Badatz Beit Yosef, the hashgacha which has matured to a respectable body to put it mildly, rolling millions of NIS annually.

  1. The halacha is clear if the will didnt specify otherwise. Daughters do not inherit. (Except if they are unmarried, which they arent, they then receive an allowance towards to pay their dowry.) Only the sons inherit. And if the olderst is a son (bchor), he receives two shares versus the rest receiving one share.

  2. Anything that appears in Yediot Achronot, especially concerning the Chareidi community, should be taken with (more than) a grain of salt.
